Mel and Jessica here with our account of our Canadian adventure. On June 29th we decided to book flights to Canada for July 1st-7th to meet up with Jessica’s cousin, alias the skipper.

When booking an international flight a day and a half before you go there really isn’t a whole a lot of planning that goes into it. All we knew was we needed to get to Smiths Falls to get on board Still Waters II. After the flight was booked, we quickly learned we booked our tickets on the worst travel day in Canada. We booked the cheapest flight, which was to the regional airport of Waterloo, thinking it would be a piece of cake to get a rental car and get to the boat. Wrong.

July 1st is Canada Day and nothing is open. Somehow we found a bus to take us from the Waterloo airport to the Toronto airport. From there we were able to get on a train to the Rogers Centre to see the Blue Jays game. We arrived in the 12th inning and got to see the last half of the game that lasted 19 innings and the Indians won. We spent the night in a suite in the Rogers Centre and were able to watch Canada Day fireworks out our window.

On July 2nd we got up, had breakfast, discovered how amazing maple syrup from Canada is, and rented bikes to explore downtown Toronto. We saw Lake Ontario, toured the Steam Whistle Brewery, and then hopped on a 3 hour train to Smiths Falls. We arrived in Smiths Falls on the evening of the 2nd in time to meet David and Claudia for dinner.

The morning of July 3rd we departed from Smiths Falls and headed down the Rideau Canal. Right off the bat, we learned first hand about the lock system. One of us would get at the bow of the boat and the other the stern and we would secure the boat to the cables to make sure the boat didn’t hit the wall or another boat. It was so fascinating to see the boat rise or lower 20 plus feet within minutes. Over our 6 days on the boat we experienced 20-30 locks. On July 4th we docked in Jones Falls in front of Hotel Kenny that was built in 1877. That night we fished but all we caught were small sun fish that weren’t big enough to keep. While fishing we discovered Mel likes to catch fish but she doesn’t want to take them off the hook. Good thing David is a nice guy because Jessica wasn’t gonna let her off the hook that easy

On the 5th we arrived in Kingston, our favorite stop of the trip. This was the first city type town we had seen in 3 days and we were ready to explore. After getting a slurpee and walking around the town for about 30 minutes we decided to stop at Toucans for some wings. While there we ended up getting a free Moosehead beer hat. When we arrived back at the boat in our new hats, Claudia wanted to know how we acquired them. The story goes, while at Toucans we entered a drinking contest. We were told that if we each could drink four 20 oz beers within 90 seconds we would get a free hat and wouldn’t have to pay for the beers. We immediately looked at each other and said “challenge accepted.” Needless to say we were each wearing a hat when we arrived back at the boat. However, we probably should have asked what the hats looked like before we accepted the challenge. We got the ugliest dad-looking trucker hats on the planet. I guess you live and you learn.

    Boating is such hard work

As we sit on the plane back to Texas talking and laughing about our amazing week aboard Still Waters II, we want to thank David and Claudia for opening up their home to us. We had great conversations, good food and tons of laughs. And Claudia there is one thing we have to admit, we really didn’t enter a drinking contest 😜. They were giving away free hats at the restaurant and we just thought that story was way cooler than we got a free hat. Cheers to our next adventure eh!

  • The Relunctant Boater

Hello fellow adventurers and virtual crew members!

Eric here gladly posting a log from the perspective of the guests Dave Weyandt (aka Fender Boy) and Martha (aka Best Mate Martha) who took a five day adventure on Still Waters II.  In their own words:

Fender Boy and Best Mate Martha are reporting on their best adventure ever!!

BMM in Life Jacket with First Mate on day 1

BMM was very reluctant about the trip when FB said he wanted to go. She
finally agreed and off they went to Jacksonville, Florida to meet the crew
on Still Waters II.  The boat was awesome and the crew, from the minute
we arrived to the minute we left, was outstanding. We can’t say enough
about the crew. The next morning, BMM strapped on her life preserver and the boating adventure began.

Day 1 ended at Jacksonville Beach with lots of rain, but it didn’t matter because we had a skillet cookie topped with ice cream to end our first leg of the trip.

Day 2 started with a walk/run to the Atlantic Ocean beach where FB had to
get in and ride the waves. Still Waters II got underway and headed south to
Palm Coast and the Hammock Beach Resort. (BMM got brave and put her life preserver away).  Dolphins were spotted swimming with the boat. It was amazing, as were the houses all along the waterway. The resort was so nice we stayed there two nights.

During our stay, much time was spent at: the beach, the largest hot tub we’d ever seen, the lazy river, and the game room. The skipper introduced  us to the ping pong game called, “Around the World” that turned out to be lots of fun to play. (Especially when BMM was the champion of all the games.)

Card games were played back on the boat where the skipper loves the first mate so much he lost the game of Hearts so she could be the winner.

Day 4 on the water led Still Waters II back north to St. Augustine, known
as the oldest continuously occupied city in the nation – 450 years and counting. A sight seeing tour on the Little Red Train and a tour of the St. Augustine Lighthouse were the hi-lights of the day.

Day 5, the last leg of the adventure, turned out to be the best traveling
day of the week. The weather was perfect for a 30 mile run in the ocean, so
the skipper and FB said, so off we went. The water was beautiful, filled
with jellyfish and dolphins. It was the perfect way to finish a great
    adventure, one we’ll never forget!!!!!

  • Jessica’s Reflection

Eric is delighted to share a blog entry by Jessica.  The following are her words and reflections of her adventure on Still Waters II………..

I arrived aboard Still Waters II on the evening of August 8th in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

    Leaving Myrtle Beach
    Leaving Myrtle Beach

Having only been on a boat 2 other times in my life, I had no clue what I was in for. All I knew was I was in need of a vacation, I had never been to the Carolina’s, and I love to fish.

Never in a million years did I think I was about to experience the most relaxing, and enjoyable vacation I have had in a long time.

On August 9th we pulled out of Myrtle Beach and headed north.

After sitting up in the helm with David and Claudia for about an hour, I began to learn about the boating life style. I learned about the red and green makers to keep you on course. Red meaning it is the side closest to the heartland and if there is a small triangle in it you are in the ICW (Inter-coastal Waterway).

After a few hours David asked me if I wanted a turn at the wheel. I was like heck yeah! In the back of my head thinking I’m about to speed this sucker up because you are going way too slow and people are passing us! I quickly learned that you actually have to pay attention to where you are going because depths of water change rapidly and that going slower saves gas. Whamp. Whamp!

During my week aboard, I learned how to tie knots, help dock the boat, and pilot the boat all while taking in the sights. I did have a mishap while fishing one night. Somehow while reaching down to grab some bait, I managed to drop my polarized Rayban sunglasses to the bottom of the marina. Rookie mistake!

Eric editorial comment – Jessica thought about diving for her glasses. The water was only about 7 feet deep. But then she remembered the gator in the water and decided the gator could keep the glasses.

    Where are my sun glasses?

When we arrived in Ocracoke, NC, I learned about Blackbeard and that we were staying in the waters that he pirated.

The night before I left, David got us a fishing charter and I got to reel in a 30″ Red Drum!

I had a blast aboard Still Waters II. I think I have found a new love and now all I need to do is figure out how to make enough money to retire, buy a boat, and join them along Americas Great Loop.
